Therapy Dogs Australia

Practices

We actively study canine behaviour, early development, and enrichment methods that help shape well-adjusted, emotionally balanced puppies. Each litter is raised with intentional socialisation and exposure programs designed to nurture calm, confident, and resilient temperaments; traits that are vital in therapy work.

Every puppy completes individual temperament evaluations to help us understand their unique personality, strengths, and suitability for various roles. Some puppies may be better suited to visiting schools for example, or more suited to private practices or nursing homes, all of these roles will have different levels of energy, tenderness or nerve strength required, so it is very important to understand what a puppy enjoys most in those early stages and nurture that.

Education

As an Educated Breeder for Therapy Dog's Australia, our goal is to raise puppies who not only bring joy and companionship to their families but also have the potential to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. As an affiliated breeder with Therapy Dogs Australia, you will receive the training at a discounted price when recommended through us.

Common Questions

How do we 'make' Therapy Dog's?

The simple answer is, we don’t. A dog ultimately decides whether therapy work is something they enjoy.

As breeders what we can do is set the best possible foundation. This starts with carefully chosen pairings, focusing on balanced temperaments, emotional stability, and a genuine love for people. From there, we nurture each puppy’s natural strengths and personality traits that are beneficial for therapy work, while ensuring their early experiences are positive and supportive.

* It’s important to understand that purchasing a potential therapy dog prospect is not a guarantee that your dog will go on to work in therapy.

How do we select potential Therapy Dog's?

Selecting a potential therapy dog begins long before the puppy is born. We start by choosing pairings with calm, people-focused temperaments and stable, confident personalities. Once the litter arrives, we observe each puppy closely as they grow — noting how they handle new experiences, their recovery from mild stress, their interest in people, and their overall emotional balance.

Puppies showing a natural softness, curiosity, and steady resilience may be considered for therapy pathways. These traits, combined with early socialisation and positive exposure, help us identify those with the greatest potential to thrive in therapy settings.

What happens after I decide on a Therapy Puppy?

Once we understand the requirements, you will be paired with an appropriate puppy which we believe is best suited to the job you need them to do. You will go through our normal welcoming home process and be provided with their behavioral assessment. Then at 6 weeks, you will be connected with Therapy Dogs Australia to start their program. As we are an affiliated breeder you will receive a discount through our recommendation to the program.

  1. 6 - 16 weeks Puppy School (online training before they come home to you)
  2. 4 - 12 months Adolescent School (online webinar format training)
  3. 12+ months Therapy Dog & Handler Training (F2F training in group setting)

* from 12 months this is when your dog (and yourself) will be assessed for a therapy role.

The Different Roles Dogs Can Play

What puppies do you offer?

The type of puppy that best suits you will depend largely on what role you’d like your dog to have within your family or wider community. Below are the different paths our puppies may be raised and temperament-matched for:

  •  Companion Dogs – Bred and raised to be loving, well-adjusted family pets with sound temperaments and easygoing natures. Companion dogs are intended to be part of the home and family unit, bringing joy and companionship to everyday life for their family.

  • Therapy Dogs – Carefully socialised and temperament-evaluated to develop calm, confident, and emotionally balanced traits that will potentially be suitable for therapy or emotional support work in the future.  Therapy dogs are often used to bring comfort and connection to others in community settings such as schools or aged care facilities or hospitals with approval.

At this time, we do not offer assistance dogs, as that is a specialised area outside of our current program focus. You can however begin your search for this type of dog by visiting:   Assistance Dogs Australia or Guide Dogs Australia
